Frequently Asked Questions

What is moissanite?

Moissanite, also known as silicon carbide, is an alternative to diamonds which has very similar visual and physical properties. It is usually lab grown using high heat and pressure which causes gases introduced around a seed of silicon carbide to crystallise and deposit layers which build up to form a moissanite.

At Ethica, the moissanite we use is the Ethica Diamond®, our signature gemstone grown using exclusive patented technology. A premium grade moissanite is infused with diamond to create a strong and durable gemstone with more fire and brilliance than a diamond. They are made to a consistent high grade, VVS1 clarity, D-E colour.

The Ethica Diamond® is the finest quality moissanite currently available on the market produced under patented technology and certified by a trusted third party.

How is a lab grown diamond made?

Lab grown diamonds, also known as synthetic or cultured diamonds, are created through a process called chemical vapour deposition (CVD) or high pressure high temperature (HPHT) methods.

In the CVD method, a small diamond seed is placed in a sealed chamber and heated to extreme temperatures. Methane gas is then introduced into the chamber, and a microwave plasma is created using high energy microwaves. The plasma breaks down the methane gas, releasing carbon atoms that accumulate on the diamond seed, layer by layer, over a period of several weeks or months. This process allows the carbon atoms to arrange themselves in the crystal lattice structure, replicating the conditions necessary for the formation of a natural diamond.

On the other hand, the HPHT method involves placing a small diamond seed in a press and subjecting it to extremely high temperatures and pressures, similar to those found deep within the Earth's mantle where natural diamonds are formed. A mixture of graphite and metal catalyst is introduced, and the press exerts pressure ranging from 5 to 6 GigaPascals, while the temperature exceeds 1500 degrees Celsius. This combination transforms the graphite into a diamond, and the seed acts as a foundation for the crystal to grow.

Both methods result in the growth of a lab grown diamond, with the CVD method typically producing higher-quality and more pure diamonds. The final diamond is then cut and polished using conventional techniques, resulting in a finished lab-grown diamond that is visually and chemically identical to a natural diamond.

Here at Ethica, all of our lab diamonds are grown using the CVD method to a high type IIA standard, consistent D-E colour, VVS quality.
