Pop the Question At Home: Eight At-Home Proposal Ideas Your Partner Will Love

For those who have been eagerly waiting to pop the question over a romantic meal at their partner’s favourite restaurant or on the holiday of a lifetime, the events over the last few months may have certainly put a kink in that plan. Whether a romantic trip has been cancelled, or perhaps lockdown has kept you both apart, you may still be anxiously waiting for the right opportunity to ask that all important question. While things are very slowly beginning to go back to normal, staying home as much as we can is still as important as ever, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to keep things under wraps. You can still create a magical, romantic proposal for your other half all within the comfort of your own home, and to give you some inspiration, we’ve put together a few ideas on how you can really nail the at-home proposal. Combined with a beautifully crafted Engagement Ring from us here at Ethica Diamonds, it’s sure to be a moment to remember for years to come!

Breakfast in Bed

If you were hoping to present your partner with their ring over coffee and croissants in a fancy hotel, fear not, you can still recreate it at home. Decorate a tray with flowers, their favourite mug and a selection of their favourite breakfast treats to create a morning you’ll both remember. In terms of how you present the ring, it’s up to you - keep it in the bedside drawer for when the moment’s right, or hide it somewhere on the tray for them to find.

Get Your Pets Involved

If your other half is a devoted parent to a fur-baby, why not get them involved in your proposal? The most common way to do this is by slipping the ring onto your pet’s collar or engraving the words onto their name tag, but depending on how well-trained (and cooperative!) they are, you could go further and have them deliver a card with “will you marry me?” or similar. Just make sure that your pet is happy and that whatever you’ve got planned is safe for them, especially if your four-legged friend is known for mischief!

Go Through Old Photos Together

There’s nothing like reminiscing to get you feeling romantic. Put together a scrapbook or a slideshow of photos of you and your partner over the years and present it to them as a gift, and you can pop the question at the end. Whether you include it on the final page or slide or just say the words when you feel the time is right is up to you - just make sure you take a snap afterwards so you can capture the moment!

Get the Kids Involved

If you’ve got children, getting them involved in the proposal can be a wonderful way to include the whole family and is sure to add the extra wow factor, and it can be done no matter what age they are. The possibilities of how you go about the proposal itself are endless and will depend on how old your children are, but simple things like having the words printed on a t-shirt for them to wear or having them “deliver” the ring at the right moment will be sure to create an unforgettable memory for everyone. Play a Game

We’ve all heard of a Scrabble proposal, but if you want to be extra creative, there’s plenty of ways you can think outside the box. You can combine your proposal with classic board games such as Monopoly, by slipping a “will you marry me?” card into the Chance pile or even by producing the ring when you have to pay rent on their property - ideal for couples that get competitive! Games such as Pictionary or Charades are also great ways to propose too, and especially if you can slip in a few bonus cards with wedding themed clues! Why not build a puzzle together over a few days to get the suspense building!

Create a Scavenger Hunt

Alternatively, if your other half enjoys a challenge, a great proposal idea could be to create a scavenger hunt throughout the house where they uncover clues that lead up to them finding the ring or the set up you’ve prepared. This is a great option for all levels of creativity too, as you can go nice and simple with a few carefully placed post-it notes, or you can go fully extra with props and themes too.

Give Them a Gift

A good way to segway into the proposal itself is to give your partner a little gift - it doesn’t have to be anything extravagant, but a good idea is to opt for something that you can hide the ring in, such a box of chocolates. Just make sure they open it in front of you rather than saving it for later!

Cook a Romantic Meal

Just because the option of visiting your favourite restaurant is out of the question, it doesn’t mean that you can’t pop the question over a romantic meal. If you’re a dab hand in the kitchen, cook a delicious meal and set up a beautiful table with candles and flowers to create the perfect atmosphere. If you’re not much of a cook, consider whether or not your favourite restaurant is offering takeaways and you can recreate the experience at home! Just because your plans might have changed and you can’t carry out the proposal you wanted, it doesn’t mean you still can’t create the perfect moment at home. All you need is a little inspiration, and of course, the perfect ring, which you’ll be able to discover right here at Ethica Diamonds!
